  1. Thank you for your interest in Search and Replace!
  2.  
  3. The 32-bit version(SR32.exe) runs on Windows NT and Windows 95, and was tested 
  4. on VFAT (Windows 95's file system), and NTFS (Windows NT's optional, more 
  5. secure file system).  SR.EXE is for use only on Windows 3.1x.
  6.  
  7. PLEASE NOTE: While Search and Replace allows replacing in binary files (such
  8. as .DOC, .XLS etc), these proprietary format files may contain internal 
  9. counters which may get out of synch.  As a result, the application that 
  10. created the file may not be able to read it.  For best results, replace 
  11. in ASCII text files (such as .HTM, .RTF, .TXT, .INI, .C, .CPP, .H etc).

  13. New features in v2.7-2.84 include:
  14. - Enhanced Regular Expression support (search/replace at a certain column/across lines 
  15.   is easier).
  16. - Filters for processing files between dates, sizes.  See Options.
  17. - Output Options were split from Search Options and expanded.  A Display replace
  18.   string feature will allow creation of reports without line numbers.  It also 
  19.   serves as a log of what was replaced (when some hits are not replaced, the
  20.   replace string is not output).
  21. - If a file is in use by another application and cannot be changed, an error 
  22.   message is now displayed.  Also, all system colors are correctly used in Windows
  23.   95 and NT 4.x.
  24. - A new, better looking Select Directory dialog is now used.
  25. - View Context dialog font can now be changed.
  26. - Options dialog is improved (uses tabs for better organization).
  27. - When using scripts, backups are made in separate directories for each path in 
  28.   the script(make sure you have enough disk space).
  29. - Script files are stored in ASCII text format for easy editing and printing (using
  30.   any text editor).
  31. - A button was added to the Binary Mode dialog (... button next to Search and
  32.   Replace string fields) to check for \ characters and change them to \\ so that
  33.   they are parsed correctly.  The dialog also checks if any \ characters may need
  34.   to be doubled (\\) and prompts the user to do so.
  35. - Searching through .ZIP archive files.  View Context, Open, Open With and
  36.   Open with Default menus can also act on files inside ZIP files.
  37. - You can prepend or append data (several lines if you want) at the beginning or
  38.   end of the files processed using the Binary Mode dialog (... buttons next to the
  39.   Search and Replace fields).  This feature can also be used with scripts.
  40. - The Script Dialog is larger.  Buttons were also added for Inserting and Moving
  41.   (Up and Down) script lines.
  42. - Write changed files to Backup Directory option now allows you to leave your
  43.   original files intact and write the changed files to the Backup Directory instead.
  44. - Show only File Names option was implemented.
  45. - Buttons for Replace/Skip in current directory were added in the Replace 
  46.   Confirmation dialog.
  47. - Regular expressions to find  (and replace) items "close by" 
  48.   (up to 4096 characters) can be set in options.  The default is 512 characters.
  49. - For the Replace option Prompt on each file, a Cancel button allows you
  50.   to stop the replace at any time.
  51. - The !^$ operators are now supported for regular expressions.  Also the []
  52.   operator now matches only one character in the list specified (to comply
  53.   more with the grep functionality).
  54. - Regular Expressions are now better documented and with more examples
  55.   in the help file.
  56. - Binary Mode dialog (... buttons next to Search and Replace strings) clearly
  57.   display the CR, LF and TAB characters.  Also the help file better explains
  58.   the use of special characters.
  59. - The Windows 95/NT version allows View Context of binary files through a new
  60.   Freeware utility: HexView.  HexView can be downloaded from 
  61.   http://www.funduc.com.  It should then be installed in the
  62.   same directory as Search and Replace(or in the path or the Windows dir.).
  63. - Scripts can be created to specify multiple search/replace combinations (with
  64.   associated settings) and/or multiple paths and masks to process.  The script 
  65.   settings (masks, paths, search/replace strings) can also be overridden
  66.   from the main screen.
  67. - New command line parameters were added for Touch, Replace and sCript file.

  69. - File Finder feature and collection of file names to process is faster.
  70. - Exclude masks can now be used.  For example: *.*;~*.swp;~*.exe;~*.dll will process
  71.   all but *.swp;*.exe;*.dll files.

  73. Features planned for future releases include:

  75. - Allow replacing at certain columns in a file using Regular Expressions.
  76. - Undo replace feature when using a Backup Directory.
  77. - Allow a "counter" type replace where a numeric value would be incremented with
  78.   every replace in a file.
  79. - Allow making changes without changing the date/time stamp.
  80. - More options for script users such as show only file names with matches, allow
  81.   searching for files containing "string1 AND (string2 OR NOT(string3))" type
  82.   expressions.
